Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) shows great promise for analyzing degradation mechanisms and evaluating the performance of lithium-ion battery cells. However, its practical implementation still faces several challenges. These include the complexity and error risks associated with traditional station-based testing processes, difficulties in ensuring stability and reproducibility in low-impedance measurements, and the high cost of dedicated EIS equipment, which hinders its scalability.
Traditionally, conducting EIS measurements requires repeatedly mounting and unmounting the battery between a DC charge/discharge system and an AC impedance analyzer, often relying heavily on manual operations. This approach is not only labor-intensive and difficult to manage, but also introduces risks factors like variations in electrical contacts and temperature fluctuations, which can lead to measurement inaccuracies—in particular when testing low-impedance batteries. Furthermore, test data are often scattered across different devices and workflows, making integration and tracking more difficult.
Chroma has introduced a battery reliability test system integrated with EIS functionality, enabling automated switching between DC charge/discharge and AC impedance measurements. This innovation eliminates the need for separate EIS testing stations: battery connections are made once with no need for repeated handling or rewiring, which significantly reduces labor demands and operational errors. A single EIS tester can support up to 72 channels, with flexible test programming that allows impedance measurements and data logging to be performed simultaneously during DC testing. This greatly enhances efficiency and data consistency. The system features high-rate output, fast response, and high measurement accuracy for DC testing, and can be paired with a temperature control chamber to simulate various application scenarios, providing a precise, stable, all-in-one testing solution.
Chroma's battery reliability test system integrates a Hioki battery impedance analyzer, offering a resolution of up to 0.1μΩ and exceptional measurement stability—both of which are critical features for performance testing of low-impedance lithium-ion batteries. For users requiring multi-channel EIS measurements, the platform provides high reliability and is well-suited for large-scale applications, delivering a precise, cost-effective, and integrated solution for lithium-ion battery performance evaluation.
