Success Story: Comprehensive Battery Cell Test Solution for F1 Racing Car

23 Oct 2023

During the Formula 1 race, frequent shifts between acceleration and deceleration continuously subject the battery to high C-rate discharging and charging. This not only puts the battery's pulse power output capabilities to the test but also generates substantial amounts of heat. This case study demonstrates how Chroma overcomes these and other difficulties.

 The Challenges

  • A dynamic charge-discharge test platform capable of simulating currents exceeding 600A, meeting requirements for low-distortion power waveform output, rapid data update rates (10ms), and supporting limited voltage and current output.
  • Designing a test platform for a simulated racing car cooling system, capable of programmably adjusting coolant and ambient air temperatures, combined with multi-channel testing.

  • Provided up to 1200A charging and discharging test current, with support for dynamic power conditions with limited current and voltage output, and capable of simulating kinetic energy recovery (regenerative braking) and instant supplemental power output of racing cars.
  • The integrated system included a temperature-controlled liquid cooling tank and an ambient temperature-controlled immersion chamber. The system software facilitated flexible adjustment of liquid tank temperature and ambient temperature, which combined with charge/discharge conditions enabled various composite temperature tests.
  • The Battery LEx software's recipe editor met the automaker's needs for testing car operation under diverse seasonal conditions.
