Empowering the Net Zero Transformation: Chroma 63700 Regenerative DC Electronic Loads Now Available

In the past, load testing in areas such as power electronics, batteries, and electric vehicles typically relied on linear electronic loads. These loads converted the power consumed during the test into waste heat, adversely affecting the environment and incurring additional costs. With the increasing demand for net-zero emissions and energy conservation, energy-efficient equipment is becoming a preferred choice among test engineers.

Chroma introduces its all-new series of 63700 Regenerative DC Electronic Loads. These instruments can recycle the energy consumed during testing back to the facility grid with an efficiency of up to 93%. Coupled with its built-in sleep mode that allows the unit to automatically enter a low-power state, Chroma 63700 offers substantial energy and cost savings.

In addition to regenerative functionality, the Chroma 63700 Series boasts a high power density of up to 18kW within a 3U chassis. Users can parallel up to 10 units for a maximum power of 180kW. Besides basic load modes such as constant voltage (CV), constant current (CC), constant resistance (CR), and constant power (CP), these loads also feature advanced modes such as programmable load sequencing (Auto Sequence) and battery discharge testing to meet a broad range of measurement and verification needs.

The TFT touch display and rotary knob on the front panel provide users an intuitive operating experience. Additionally, the unit can be remotely controlled through LAN, USB, GPIB, CAN, and Chroma’s dedicated SoftPanel software (pictured below), which provides a rich user interface for comprehensive control and visualization.

While automobiles have improved our lives, they also raise environmental concerns like air pollution and energy crises. The increasing environmental consciousness and widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has led to a booming demand for EV supply equipment (EVSE) and On-Board Chargers (OBC). The reliability testing for these OBCs is costly, involving testing times as long as 1,000 hours. For instance, in case of an 11kW OBC reliability test, linear electronic load testing consumes approximately 11,000kWh. In contrast, regenerative testing consumes only 770kWh, saving as much as 10,230kWh and eliminating 3.95 tons of carbon emissions.
