As the medical industry moves towards the precision medicine model, healthcare professionals rely increasingly on specialized displays to aid in a range of procedures, from ultrasound and laparoscopy to endoscopy and invasive surgery. The more detailed the image, the more accurate the diagnosis, which drives the demand for displays that offer clearer, higher resolution images with improved color contrast, grayscale, and detailed tissue layers.
In response, major display manufacturers have introduced high-end displays designed specifically for medical imaging. These displays must meet various video signal standards while also delivering high resolution, high contrast, wide color gamut, multi-screen display, 3D, and other functions. Developing and manufacturing these displays is not without its challenges, and defects are inevitable. Therefore, the ability to quickly detect and resolve such issues has become crucial for major manufacturers. The Chroma 2238 Video Pattern Generator, combined with the Chroma A223800 12G-SDI Signal Module, provides a suitable test solution for the many functions of high-end medical displays.
8K, 4K High-Resolution Test Applications
The Chroma A223800 12G-SDI Signal Module features four SDI output ports. A single port can output resolutions up to 4K@60Hz, while four ports together support resolutions up to 8K@60Hz. The module outputs various industry-standard SDI signals (SD-SDI / HD-SDI / 3G-SDI (Level A/B) / 6G-SDI / 12G-SDI), and comes with over 240 built-in standard SDI timing parameters.
The A223800's multi-port output has a Square Division mode, which enables a single 12G-SDI module to split the screen into four quadrants (as shown in Figure 1) for simultaneous testing of output from multiple ports. Up to four 3G-SDI modules can be connected for a 16-quadrant split-screen. In compliance with the relevant standards, Sample-Interleave mode (ST425-3, ST425-5, ST2081(2)-11, ST2081(2)-12) enables the four 12G-SDI ports to output pixels in an interleaved manner (as shown in Figure 2), suitable for a range of high-resolution test applications.

3D Test Output with Realistic Organ-Level Imaging
Chroma A223800 comes with 34 pre-installed 3D test patterns compliant with the ST 2068:2013 Stereoscopic 3D Frame Compatible Packing and Signaling for HDTV standard. When transmitting 3D data, the Left and Right eye images are each reduced to half resolution and then combined. With this, users can quickly check for 3D imaging issues using different 3D display formats such as dual-stream, side-by-side, line-by-line, and top-and-bottom. Additionally, the A223800 supports a wide range of color gamuts, including RGB, ITU-R BT.601, ITU-R BT.709, and ITU-R BT.2020, enabling comprehensive testing to verify that the output has a sense of depth and imaging that accurately displays human anatomy.

When outfitted with the A223800 12G-SDI Signal Module, the Chroma 2238 Video Pattern Generator supports 10/12 bits color depths, HDR output, as well as simultaneous multi-source signal output testing. For inspection of medical-grade displays, Chroma also provides modules for different signal interfaces such as A223814 HDMI 2.1a 10K and A223806 DVI Dual-link 330MHz. Additionally, the 2238 can be paired with the Chroma 71241 High-Precision Universal Measurement Probe, whose measurement capabilities include 0.001cd/m2 to 6000cd/m2 brightness reaching up to a million-to-one contrast ratio. All this allows for accurate inspection of display brightness and color performance, providing a complete high-end medical display and optical integration test solution.
