As electric vehicles (EVs) increasingly integrate with smart grids, ISO 15118 20 has become a core standard for next generation EV charging. This new version of the 15118 protocol not only enhances smart communication between vehicles and charging equipment—such as Dynamic and Scheduled charging modes, which allow charging strategies to be flexibly adjusted to grid conditions—but more critically, it supports Bidirectional Power Transfer (BPT). This enables EVs to feed electricity back into the grid, helping advance V2G (Vehicle to Grid) initiatives. Additionally, communication security has been upgraded to TLS 1.3, strengthening data exchange security during the charging process.
However, alongside the rapid advancement of ultra-fast charging, charging currents continue to climb, presenting greater challenges for high-power charging equipment in terms of heat dissipation and safety design. To ensure stable and efficient operation under high current and extended durations, liquid cooling technology has become an essential thermal design approach for high power charging systems.
Chroma 8000 EV & EVSE Automated Test System
To address the testing needs of next generation charging communication and high power charging architectures, Chroma has introduced the Chroma 8000 EV & EVSE automated test system (ATS), designed specifically for simultaneous multi connector testing of DC EVSE (EV supply equipment), EV charging compatibility validation, and high current liquid cooled charging tests.
When paired with the Chroma 80713 EV & EVSE simulator, the system supports testing for both the mainstream ISO 15118 2 and the latest ISO 15118 20 requirements, enabling users to perform comprehensive interoperability and communication protocol validation.
- ISO 15118 2: The mainstream DC fast charging communication framework, applicable to compatibility testing for current mass produced EVs and charging stations.
- ISO 15118 20: Developed for next generation high power charging needs, expanding on ISO 15118 2 with support for Plug & Charge (PnC), Wireless Power Transfer (WPT), Bidirectional Power Transfer (BPT), and Megawatt Charging System (MCS) applications
Meeting High Power and Liquid Cooled High Current Charging Test Requirements
With the rapid advancement of high power DC fast charging and liquid cooled charging connector technologies, the Chroma 8000 ATS provides system integration capabilities tailored for high current and liquid cooled charging tests. It supports stable, long duration high current testing, while its highly reliable power switching design helps reduce the risk of test interruptions. This makes the system especially suitable for validating liquid cooled charging connectors, high power modules, and MCS related applications.
Chroma's AC/DC charging test platform is built to meet next-generation charging standards. It enables fast, safe, and stable switching between power sources and loads, supporting the simulation of complex charging scenarios.
Dynamic data analysis and charging recording/playback functions allow users to monitor test results in real time and perform charge playback validation, helping improve interoperability between EVs and charging stations. Together, these capabilities provide a complete test solution for product development as well as validation.
