Chroma Presents E-Scooter Fast Charging Test Ahead of Schedule to Help CHAdeMO Association

20 Oct 2020

The various restrictions on the sale of gasoline-powered scooters by governments all around have promoted the rapid development of the electric scooter industry. The current popularization of charging stations will likewise boost the sales of e-scooters. Driven by market demand, the safety and standardization of electric scooters have also received much attention, and the formulation of relevant standards proved urgent.

In 2018, the Taiwanese government completed the Taiwan E-scooter Standard (TES) as the domestic industry standard for fast charging of electric scooters and also announced the official transition from gasoline-powered scooters to electric variants. Chroma ATE quickly seized this opportunity and led the industry to ride this new trend. Chroma once again joined hands with the Ship and Ocean Industries R&D Center (SOIC) in Taiwan and, together, developed the CHAdeMO electric vehicle charging interface simulator. Not only did we so further extend test business opportunities into the electric vehicle (EV) market, but we also swiftly completed the fast charging test system for two-wheeled EV, and built test capacity for domestic third-party laboratories and verification centers. Besides, as part of the CHAdeMO Association’s Technical Workshop, Chroma also helped to establish the Protocol Check Sheet for fast charging test standards for two-wheeled EV, in line with the international development of the EV industry.

The Chroma e-scooter fast charging test system meets the 120Vdc/100A requirements of the CHAdeMO regulations. Its flexible hardware configuration can be upgraded according to individual needs and the system can be integrated with the two-wheel EV charging test system. The test architecture is based on the Chroma 8000 ATS with complete automated test functions. The software contains built-in test cases conform to legal definitions and a user-friendly interface that offers users convenient test parameter editing according to the various test requirements. The figure below shows a system demonstration of the test solution:

The CHAdeMO Association was formed in 2010 by Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. and major Japanese car manufacturers. The association aims to realize the most suitable fast charging standard for EVs worldwide and so to contribute to the popularization of EV.

SOIC implements the technology projects of the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Taiwan. SOIC cooperates with domestic schools and research units to develop key technologies, such as ship power subsystems, CHAdeMO DC fast charging and core control equipment systems required for self-driving ships, smart collision avoidance systems, et cetera.

Chroma ATE is a world-leading supplier of precision test and measurement instrumentation, automated test systems, intelligent manufacturing systems, and test & automation turnkey solutions. With a wealth of knowledge and skills accumulated over more than 30 years of testing experience in the field of power electronics, we continuously propose test solutions in new energy industries, including EV, microgrid energy storage, and fuel cells.
